Hamish & Flynn – Great Dane dog standing with Chihuahua dog in between his front feet.
When Rachael set about photographing Dogs for her first book ‘101 Salivations: For the Love of Dogs’ Rachael wanted to portray the huge variation in Dog breeds, and what better way to showcase this, than to capture an image of one of the tallest breeds and one of the smallest breeds together. Rachael found a Great Dane breeder in New Zealand who knew the perfect Chihuahua; Flynn, their gorgeous 6 year old gentle giant had recently become best friends with Hamish, an 11 month old Chihuahua who lived next door. Both dogs were impeccably behaved during the photoshoot, thankfully Hamish was use to Flynn’s size as it could have been very daunting for a dog that small to sit beneath a dog whose legs were twice the height of you and one of their toes was the same size as your entire paw, this is why it was important for Rachael to use two dogs that knew each other and to use a Great Dane that had a very quiet and gentle nature.
These were the last photographs taken of handsome Flynn, taken only hours before he passed away. While Rachael was absolutely devastated at the news of his passing, his owners were incredibly grateful that Rachael had captured these images so they could always remember their beautiful boy.
This image of Hamish and Flynn featured as the cover of Rachael’s first book 101 Salivations: For the Love of Dogs, and a closer image of Hamish sitting between Flynn’s front paws appeared in Rachael’s book It’s a Zoo Out There
Hamish & Flynn were photographed by Rachael using her 4x5 inch Toyo View Camera with Pos/Neg B&W Polaroid Film, against a painted canvas backdrop, using a large Octo Elinchrom Softbox Studio Flash.
* This image is from Rachael’s earlier work, which were all photographed using a Large Format 4x5 inch Film Camera, and occasionally a 8x10 inch Polaroid Camera. Rachael used a very shallow depth of field when photographing with film cameras, this gives these images a softer more painterly quality when printed, the prints still look stunning in all sizes and make magnificent Art pieces, they just don’t appear quite as crisp as an image created on a digital camera.
Rachael recommends this image to be framed using a White, Whitewashed, Oak or Dark Wood Frame with a white border, or as a canvas with a White, Black or Dark Wood float frame surround.
Fine Art Prints are available in five different sizes; 10x12, 12x16, 16x20, 24x30 and 30x40 inches
We have a collection of beautifully crafted Wood Box frames available in 5 different colour ways to choose from for framing your Fine Art Prints: Black, White, White Wash, Grey and Dark Wood.
Fine Art Prints can be framed full bleed, or you can choose the option to have a white border around your image to separate the image from the frame. If you choose to have a border, the image size will be smaller; for example, if you choose a 10x12 inch print with a border, your final product size will be 10x12 inch but your image size will be closer to 8x10 inches.
