Henry Couch Potato - Canvas (US)
Henry Couch Potato- Chocolate Newfoundland dog asleep on a vintage couch
Henry was Rachael’s dog and his absolute favourite pastime was sleeping, so Rachael decided to let him perform his dream photoshoot, to actually get to sleep on the job! Rachael had seen this couch on the front porch of a house she had walked past numerous times while out on her morning walk, and knew that this couch had the perfect look for the image she wanted to create. With this in mind, Rachael knocked on the door to ask if there was any possibility of borrowing the couch for a photoshoot and would they mind if her Newfie lay on it? It turned out that the couch was their dogs hang out, so it was no problem whatsoever to let Henry laze on it for a photo shoot. To create the rustic raw floor boards under the couch, Rachael purchased some old floor boards from a demolition yard and then sanded them all back to their raw state, this caused them all to be slightly different colour tones which Rachael loved. To create the background, Rachael hung a aqua coloured paper background which rolled down onto the floor.
Next was to get Henry asleep on the couch, this was a piece of cake, it literally took less than a minute to encourage Henry to get up on the couch and lay down as if he was asleep, within minutes he actually WAS asleep, until Rachael woke him up and asked him to change position. There is a series of 9 of these images with Henry sleeping or sitting in a different position, it looks gorgeous as a series, but it is Rachael’s absolute favourite which looks amazing as a large print.
Henry Couch Potato appeared in Rachael’s first book It’s a Zoo Out There
Henry was Photographed by Rachael using a 8x10 inch Sinar Camera with 8x10 inch Polaroid Film in Natural Light. The edges around the image are the edges that are created by the use of this type of film.
* This image is from Rachael’s earlier work, which were all photographed using a Large Format 4x5 inch Film Camera, and occasionally a 8x10 inch Polaroid Camera. Rachael used a very shallow depth of field when photographing with film cameras, this gives these images a softer more painterly quality when printed, the prints still look stunning in all sizes and make magnificent Art pieces, they just don’t appear quite as crisp as an image created on a digital camera.
Rachael recommends this image to be framed using a White, Black or dark Wood Frame with a border. It looks amazing as a stretched canvas with the Polaroid edges mirrored, this creates its own frame effect.
Fine Art Prints are available in five different sizes; 10x12, 12x16, 16x20, 24x30 and 30x40 inches
