Maggie & Caesar – Two Golden Labrador Puppies in a bubble bath

Rachael always knows she’s in for a fun day when she’s off to breeders to work with a litter of puppies, on this day it was a litter of 7 week old Labrador Retrievers who had been bred as potential Guide Dogs. It was a lovely hot summer's day, knowing she would make a mess with soapy foam and water, Rachael and her assistant set up the background in the driveway at the breeder's home. To soften the harshness of the new Zealand sunlight, Rachael attached diffusers (white parachute cloth) from the background stands to another set of stands near the camera, this kept the puppies in softer light making it easier to capture a less contrasty image. Rachael lined the old bathtub with soft blankets and once the foam bubbles were made in separate buckets nearby, Rachael placed Maggie & Caesar into the tub and settled them down to relax. They had been running around with their littermates during the ‘set up’ period, so with the warm temperatures, we're ready to settle down when isolated in the tub. Caesar was so exhausted it didn’t take long for him to nod off. While the puppies rested, and Maggie listened to Rachael’s voice, Rachael’s assistant gently placed soapy bubbles on the pups, avoiding the eye area, to create the effect of a luxurious bubble bath. Once the shots were captured, Maggie and Caesar were off again playing with their littermates, but not until they had been given a cooling hose off to remove any of the soapy bubbles.

Maggie & Caesar appeared on the cover of the American edition of Rachael’s book It’s a Zoo Out There, they also feature inside the book.

Maggie & Caesar were Photographed by Rachael using her 4x5 inch Toyo View Camera with 160 Portra Film, on the driveway of the breeder's home using Natural Light.

* This image is from Rachael’s earlier work, which were all photographed using a Large Format 4x5 inch Film Camera, and occasionally an 8x10 inch Polaroid Camera. Rachael used a very shallow depth of field when photographing with film cameras, this gives these images a softer more painterly quality when printed, the prints still look stunning in all sizes and make magnificent Art pieces, they just don’t appear quite as crisp as an image created on a digital camera.

Rachael recommends this image be framed using a White, Whitewashed, or Oak Frame with or without a border.
