Pentanque, Saint Paul de Vence, Provence, France
Pètanque is played in towns and villages all over France. The origins of the game are thought to date back to the Egyptians and the ancient Greeks, and the Romans are said to have introduced it to Provence first. The modern version of the game was created in 1907 in the town of La Ciotat where the first tournament was played in 1910. The steel boules commonly used today were first introduced in 1927. Pètanque was a common sighting in the villages during Rachael’s travels of France, she recalls one elderly gentleman telling her that he loved ‘Pètanque’ Days, as it was the only time he escaped from his wife.
